On this day, from the ashes, rose The D at Red Rocks Amphitheatre! Tenacious D and The Sights graced the red rock walls with their rock, and it was amazing. I’ve never seen a bad show at Red Rocks. The view and the acoustics create a great atmosphere for music. This event had general admission in rows 3 – 25 and 60 to the back. Reserved seating was 25 – 60. This offered a great opportunity for people to get as close as they wanted for a very reasonable price. The patrons were very respectful of each other and didn’t crowd the front as you would expect. This made the overall concert very enjoyable. An added bonus is that a local artist made up 150 Tenacious D Red Rocks Amphitheatre posters! Eddie Baranek of The Sights. So some of you might be saying, “The Sights?” I make this assumption because I’m right there with you. Tenacious D was so gracious as to introduce them to their fan base by having them as the opener. Here’s the skinny. They are a rock band from Detroit that formed in 1998. They have great energy, and I’d personally classify them as feel good rock. The band is made up of a guitar/lead singer, drums, keyboard, bass, and saxophone. Their set was good, created a lot of energy, and got people ready for The D. Here’s an old video; give them a listen. Jack Black of Tenacious D. On to The D and the Rize Of The Fenix! I’m a big Tenacious D fan, but this is the first time I’ve seen them perform live. They played great, but honestly, I was a little disappointed in the production. Since there was so much hype over the Rize Of The Fenix CD, I expected a lot out of the stage. You were given a stage with instruments, lights, and a giant inflatable phoenix. Even though the stage was disappointing, they made up for it with a wonderful performance: so much so that you often didn’t even think about the lack of props. Jack Black and Kyle Gass were joined with John Spiker on bass (formerly of Filter), Brooks Wackerman on drums (Bad Religion), and John Konesky on electric guitar. The acoustic duo stole the stage with all the antics you would expect from the comedy troupe – including a mid set band break up followed by the imminent band reformation and a visit from Satan. Though altitude was getting to Jack, he still managed to flail around and belt out lyrics. Red Rocks was packed with D-ciples, and a good chunk of their set featured songs off their new CD. The crowd very much embarrassed the new material and sang along as though it were a familiar melody. Most bands I’ve seen with new CDs could not pull off this move with their new material. Tenacious D definitely stepped up and delivered a great 3rd album. They finally ended with an explosion, as you would expect. There was also a three song encore featuring some classic D songs in classic D form: two acoustic guitars and a stage. Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. Overall, it was a great event – one I’d love to see again and again. I highly recommend catching these guys live. The memories and songs are still echoing in my head and will until the next event.
